Tips on when client brings own models

Our take

Navigating a commercial shoot for a small food brand presents unique challenges, especially when the client opts to use their own models—often family members or loyal customers. Given the tight budget constraints, compensating these models with monetary payment may be unfeasible. However, offering a thoughtful gift from the client can serve as an alternative form of appreciation. It’s essential to formalize this arrangement with a clear contract to ensure mutual understanding and respect for everyone involved.

Working with a small food brand for a commercial shoot for the first time. Budget is tight, so client wants brings in their own models, which in this situation is family members and long-time customers. If the budget is already tight that they (the family models) can't be paid with actual money, is exchange of a gift from the client reasonable? Along with a contract of course
