What is the modeling industry like in 2026?

Our take

In 2026, the modeling industry has transformed into a vibrant digital landscape, where traditional casting calls have largely been replaced by online platforms. As a seasoned photographer with extensive experience, you may find that models can successfully navigate their careers without agencies, as your friend has demonstrated. While agencies still play a role, many are now more focused on digital submissions rather than physical portfolios.

Hi! I'm a professional photographer who's worked with a lot of high profile clients (Jay Z, Versace, a few royal families, etc.) Roughly 15 years ago I worked as a production assistant on shoots doing castings with a few agencies such as Ford, Wilhelmina, etc. I have a friend who models for brands like Jordan, Nike, NBA etc. He's also done a lot of commercials as well and has done all this without an agency.

I feel a little out of touch to give him advice because when I was in the industry, casting calls were a thing. I remember the girls walking through NY with their books and waiting in line at these agencies but it's my understanding everything is digital now. With his experience with big brands would you recommend he go the agency route or keep doing what he's currently doing? From what I can tell, a lot of agencies have websites to submit your info, but nothing really to submit your portfolio. So how would someone with a lot of experience with major brands showcase this?
